Linda Craig - I believe the teacher you are referring to teaches a (key word here) philosophy class. As a former student, I can assure you we were never encouraged to brutalize animals or eat them. That class was about challenging students and getting us involved in discussions. And assuming that a, as you said, whack job student takes it seriously, that's not the teachers fault if the thousands of other kids he has taught pass through his class understanding that is not what his lessons are about (you're also dangerously close to the line of being ignorant about the broader environmental issues surrounding mental illness in young people). Maybe a thought for you: take your concerns up with the school or the teacher directly instead of posing your opinion on a forum they wouldn't know to respond to. Google is not the place for reviewing our education system, at least not if you're hoping to affect change or have any meaningful conversation about it.
